Software usage training in Slovenia

In the period from 13 to 17.07.2022. some members of the project team were in Slovenia at the Biotechnical Faculty, University of Ljubljana. The goal of the trip was training for the prediction genomic breeding values in dairy cattle. For this purpose, professor Dr. Klemen Potočnik and his colleagues prepared lectures on the topic of genomic selection in small cattle populations and the use of software specialized for the prediction genomic breeding values, and the preparation of data for analysis. A web application for displaying the results, which has open access, was also presented. Also, two projects were briefly presented. One is managed by prof. Dr. Klemen Potočnik, and it refers to the introduction of genomic selection in Holstein Friesian and Brown Swiss cattle breeds in Slovenia and was approved as part of the European Innovation Partnership (EIPs) call. The second project is related to digitization in animal husbandry and it is a project of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Slovenia.

In front of the Department of Genetics, Animal Biotechnology and Immunology, prof. Dr. Tanja Kunej and her colleagues prepared very interesting presentations regarding the use of SNP chips in population genetics. Also, prof. Dr. Peter Dovč showed laboratories and equipment for molecular genetic analyses.

During the training, team members also visited a demonstration farm where horses and poultry are bred. The faculty also has a farm for breeding other types of animals, but considering that one of the employees fell ill (COVID), it was not possible to visit it.

At the end of the training, possibilities for further cooperation were discussed, primarily in the field of cattle breeding and horse breeding. In the following period, the cooperation will continue through the processing of data for the PhD dissertation, and then through the writing of scientific papers, which would create the conditions for reporting joint projects and the association of databases for the evaluation of breeding values.

Training of breeders and breeding organizations representatives – Seminar of breeding organization

The training of breeders and representatives of breeding organizations continued at the Seminar of Breeding Organizations in livestock production of AP Vojvodina organized by the Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad as the central breeding organization. Professional lectures of the seminar were organized in Vrnjačka banja in the period from 29.05. until 01.06.2022. where the PI of the project team is assoc. professor Dr. Ljuba Štrbac held a lecture on Bioinformatics approach to dairy cattle breeding using genomic selection. The aim of the lecture was to present a web application that breeders and breeding organizations will be able to use in order to more efficiently carry out tasks related to the formation of mating plans and monitoring of production characteristics of dairy cattle.

The second part of the Seminar was organized through the workshop Application of information technologies in the implementation of breeding programs, which was held at the Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad from 6 to 9 June 2022. Members of the project team took an active part and organized training for representatives of the central breeding organizations with the following topics:

Dr. Ljuba Štrbac – Genetic parameters in animal breeding; Introduction to Wombat

Dr. Nebojša Dedović Variance components estimation; Setting up the model

Dr. Doni Pracner – Databases

Training of breeders and breeding organizations representatives – 89th International Agricultural Fair in Novi Sad

As part of the International Agricultural Fair, more precisely for the Day of farmers on 26/05/2022. when the Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad, the Faculty of Agriculture in Zemun and the Institute of Animal Husbandry in Zemun organize expert lectures, assistant professor Dr. Mirko Ivković and professor Dr. Laslo Tarjan presented the project of young researchers – BioITGenoSelect.

Mirko Ivković presented the idea of the project and the implemented activities, while Laszlo Tarjan presented the results so far in the field of artificial intelligence application in agriculture, with a special emphasis on dairy cattle breeding.

The lecture was attended by breeders – exhibitors and visitors at the International Agricultural Fair, representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Provincial Secretariat for Agriculture, representatives of livestock breeding organizations and animal husbandry students.

Improved ranking support for the animal database

Breeding values for animals can be imported from an external software (primarily Wombat, but can be expanded further). This data can then be automatically recalculated into relative breeding values and the animals ranked based on this. The calculations can be adapted depending on the selected models. This saves a lot of manual work in processing and expedites the process. Additionally, there are features to import any  data that already contains relative breeding values and rankings if needed.

This data can be seen for individual animals on their respective pages. The data has been augmented with bars that display the relative values compared to a 100, enabling the viewer to gain an insight into the values at a glance.

Of course, the main rankings are also searchable on the web site.
